Hikari 1 -:- Friday, November 28, 2008

My Site and Drunk Duck

Here's the cover for Hikari, which Olivia masterfully put together without any direction from me. She knew the characters and the general feel of the story that I was going for, but nothing much beyond this. She came up with this design during our time at Pokagon (an annual trip that our two families take), while I was writing the initial outline for the story.

Absolutely amazing.

Then I added some text and stuff to it...hopefully didn't ruin the thing.

Anyway, if you missed it, Temple was featured on the main site last week, and I thank everyone (both new and old readers) for checking it out. I write this thing because you all seem to enjoy it so much, and I hope that you continue to enjoy it. This is going to be a hard-hitting fast paced story that features Sophia, and takes place about 16 years before the original Temple storyline. Dig it!

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone, and I'll see you next week for the inside cover page.

@$$hole #76: Orientation (Part 1) -:- Monday, November 24, 2008

My Site and Drunk Duck

Remember WAY back in the day when Susie went in for a job interview, killed the dude with poison, and then landed herself her first job...and then we got distracted by a Birthday story for Laura and a photo comic story arc about Waffles the Cat?

Well, it happened. And now we're going to see her first day of orientation in the next few pages, before I just into the next large storyline.

I had wanted to take advantage of her getting a job and tell a few jokes with it, but kept getting distracted by other story opportunities. The fact is, I like the idea of Susie having a job and there are so many jokes that I can tell about her working in food service (having worked in food service myself back in the day). I didn't want the opportunity to pass me by with the next story arc, since it's going to be a longer story.

Anyway, enjoy the update and I'll see you all next week (after Thanksgiving. Don't die trying to get your holiday shopping done).

Temple - FEATURED! -:- Thursday, November 20, 2008

After over a year of updating on Drunk Duck, The Temple of a Thousand Tears was finally featured on their main page.  I was wondering what it would take to get the comic featured, as many of the other comics that I read have been featured.  Several of them update more often than me (and several of them have better artwork than my original stories), but not all of them.

Today's a happy day!

Halloween 2008 -:-

Sorry for the late blog about the Halloween Party, but I've been absolutely swamped lately.

The party went off without a hitch - in fact, several pleasant surprises happened that night which made the evening that much more enjoyable.  For starters, before the party even began, my friend Lynette drove all the way down to see me and we hung out all day, going out to lunch and checking out shops downtown Ann Arbor.  When it was around party time, she helped apply my body paint (for the fake tattoos) as people were showing up.

Inventive costumes were the name of the game that night, with Scott dressing up as a person attending a time traveling convention (complete with his time traveling device), and Megan and Laura coming as a pair of atoms that made up Hydrogen.  Scott Pearson had on an impressive Edward Scissorhands outfit, and Alicia wore the scrubs that her and I had gone out to shop for earlier that week.

No one seemed to know who I was this year (thus confirming that my friends need to read more comic books), but it gets tricky to find a shirtless bald character to play every year.  I went as Spider Jerusalem (sans the sun glasses and several more of the arm tattoos) from the comic series Transmetropolitan.

As the night went on, the surprises for the evening kept on coming.  People brought a crap-ton of food - delicious food - and had a great time conversing while consuming it.  Alison made her infamous pudding shots (chocolate AND cheesecake), and people brought muffins and chips with dip and apples with caramel.  There were drinks abounding, and everyone had a great time.

Several people that I didn't expect to make it made it, including my college friends Lizzie and Becca, and people (Mike, Kris, and Scott's sister Megan) who drove all the way from Kalamazoo to dress up, drink, and be merry.  Megan and Laura drove up from Bowling Green.  Pat and Meg showed up sporting some authentic looking costumes.  Erica and Miha also attended (this being the first party of mine that they've been brave enough to show up to), as well as Olivia and Cas.  Even Shane and Kelly, despite the fact that neither were feeling very well, made an appearance.

Waffles was not used to being around such a large group of people (roughly double the size of the largest Movie Night we've had since everyone broke up and / or moved away over the summer), so she spent a good chunk of the night attempting to sneak food from people and trying to avoid everyone at the same time (don't ask me how cat logic works, it's just what I observed).

The party lasted late into the morning, breaking apart around 3am when people were finally sober enough to drive home (and my eyes couldn't possibly stay open any longer).  A few people stayed the night, and I was rather hung over the next day (having drank far too much whiskey that was provided by Lizzie's boyfriend...which I will have to replace at some point in the near future).

Overall, the party was a complete blast and I thank everyone who showed up and brought food or drinks or share.  Without you, these parties wouldn't be nearly this much fun - the people make the party, and you all made this party great!

Same time next year?  ;)

@$$hole! #75: TMNT and The Legend of Abraham 26 -:- Tuesday, November 18, 2008

My Site and Drunk Duck

My return to illustrations! Actually, I've been sitting on this one since before the photo story arc started, which is why it looks a little rushed. It was mostly done until I started in the studio with the photos, but then I set it down because I didn't know how I wanted to move forward with the comic. Now that I know, I decided to go back to it.

I'm going to try to get a few "low hanging apples" cleared out before starting the next big story arc - namely, Susie's job. She landed a job back before Laura's 21st Birthday story arc, and we haven't mentioned it since. Well, the next 4 pages will be her "orientation," and then I'll probably move on to Trevor's Birthday Adventure, which will see the return of some old / under used characters...as well as a few new faces. This story will easily take us into 2009, which I hope will be a better year than 2008 has been.

It should be a fun time, to be sure.

Be sure to pick up Lora Innes' "The Dreamer," in stores 2 days ago! I've been reading this comic online for some time now, and met Lora and her husband at Wizard World Chicago last summer. She's an awesome person with a fantastic sense of pace and storytelling, and a great love and appreciation for American history. And somehow, she manages to wrap it all up with a kick ass art style in her amazing comic, so be sure to show her some love and support and buy her book.

I'm going back to job hunting...or some comic brainstorming. See you all next week!

The End.  Next week: Hikari!

The Legend of Abraham 25 -:- Wednesday, November 12, 2008

My Site and Drunk Duck

Abraham receives the Seven Lost Keys (do we know what they all are yet?), and a prophesy...more to come in next week's update, which is the final page of this prequel story.

After this will be the prequel for Sophia, originally called "Genocide" but now changed to "Hikari," with more artwork by Olivia. I know that I had told you that Bushido would be next, but circumstances in my life, regrettably, didn't allow me to get the script and artwork done on time. Olivia, however, is not only a faster artist, but also a much better one. I think I'll stick with her as long as she'll tolerate my crappy / depressing writing. :P

@$$hole! #74: Photo vs Illustrated -:- Monday, November 10, 2008

My Site and Drunk Duck

I wanted to have a transition between the photo storyline and the illustrated storyline, so that the jump back to the illustrated world wasn't so abrupt like the start of the photo story arc. So, here it is. Photo Trevor and illustrated Trevor are two very different people who live in two somewhat different worlds.

This is key to some story arcs that I have planned for down the road...but probably by that time, you'll have forgotten this post. :P

Also, this is the 150 milestone on Drunk Duck! Thank you for reading and commenting (and coming back for more) for this comic that you all seem to enjoy so much. I make it for you.

...and to keep myself away from video games. ;)

@$$hole! #73: Cynthia (revised) -:- Thursday, November 06, 2008

My Site and Drunk Duck

So it's my birthday, but you guys are the ones receiving the gift: an extra @$$hole! update!

Alright, alright...it's a REVISED @$$hole! update. I had been talking to a few people about how disappointed I was in myself for lacking a punchline in the latest update, and then we started coming up with ideas...and what you see above is what won out.

I apologize to everyone who sent in banner suggestions for the "Trevor in '08" campaign, because I was never able to get around to creating a banner with the winners. There were so many great entries, but it also took place during Drunk Duck's e-mail issues, and several of the e-mails disappeared! I was very upset, as many of those e-mails had my top choices for the banner winners.

So thank you for participating, and I'm sorry that I let you down. Next time, I'll just ask for banner entries and the best banner will win! :D

Anyway, I've decided to take the day off from job hunting and do something fun...like put Friday's update together. And have dinner with my folks. So happy hump day to the rest of you, and I hope you have a great week. See you in 2 days!

The Legend of Abraham 24 -:- Monday, November 03, 2008

My Site and Drunk Duck

And with his vote, Abraham has banished the gods from the world of mortals forever! A bit of a twist, thus making his mission a complete failure.

Failure seems to be a theme throughout this story, doesn't it....

My birthday's coming up this week (Wednesday), and don't forget to vote tomorrow! Whoever's elected, hopefully they can make a difference and turn things around - because the last 8 years have been absolute crap!

@$$hole! #73: Cynthia -:-

My Site and Drunk Duck

I'm a little nervous about putting this page up, only because Laura hasn't been talking to me for a few months now, and may not think that it's a joke if she reads it. The intention isn't to insult or pour salt on any wounds...it's just to be silly and funny.

But yes, she's been dating someone else for a while now (which isn't important - what's important is that she's happy)...and yes, I did name my new TV Cynthia. To be fair, I made the purchase before I was downsized (but had to pay for it after the fact, which sucked). The TV is absolutely awesome! 42" LCD 120hz, and it's an LG brand (which is Korean). It was the price that I wanted and the hook ups that I wanted, but a little sooner than I had anticipated buying it.

I figured it would be funny to compare a piece of technology to a girlfriend, because the truth is that when you're single all you really have is your stuff (and friends, naturally). However, stuff doesn't ever really bring you happiness - so to imply otherwise makes a silly joke.

So I started thinking about things that you would do with a girlfriend, and how silly it could be to do those things with a TV. Like go on vacations! I wanted to include other things, and possibly do some more awful photoshop jobs (done awful on purpose), but I thought it took away from the joke. For example, I was going to put sunglasses on me and the TV on the beach shot - very obvious that we weren't wearing those when the photo was taken. I was going to include a goth club scene or something, and put a ball-gag over the TV. Little things like that.

Perhaps another time....

The next update will be the last photo update for a while, and will kind of explain the differences between photo Trevor and illustrated Trevor - which will hopefully make for a good segue back into the illustrated pages.

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Collective Comics mentions @$$hole! -:-

Collective Comics

My buddies over at Collective Comics made mention of the recent photo comic story arc from @$$hole!, and decided to try it themselves.  Be sure to check it out, and the rest of their stuff.  Rose City updates on Wednesdays, and it's a fun read!
